Bob Henrickson

Bob
was born and raised in Dodge, a small town in northeast Nebraska. He
attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with a
degree in natural resources while working as a landscape assistant
with
UNL
Botanical Garden
and Arboretum. After supervising an area of campus he moved to become
curator of State Fair Park Arboretum inLincoln.
Currently, Bob is the assistant director of horticulture programs with
the
Nebraska
Statewide Arboretum. His responsibilities include coordinating
the GreatPlants® for the Great Plains program and to acquire,
propagate and produce native and exotic plants for distribution and
evaluation to NSA members and affiliated arboretum sites.
A
Nebraska Certified Nurseryman and a certified arborist with the
International Society of Arboriculture, Bob also co-hosts a gardening
talk show on a Lincoln radio station. He is passionate about promoting
regionally native plants and hardy exotic plants that not only provide
seasonal beauty, but are also easy on the environment and reflect a
sense of place here on the Plains.
Proven Perennial Performers (Native and
hardy exotics)
This presentation will discuss the use of hardy herbaceous perennials to
create a low maintenance landscape. Focus will be on plants that provide
seasonal interest with minimal use of fertilizer, pest control, and
supplemental watering.
Andrew Joseph
State Apiarist
Des Moines,
Iowa
Andy is the
Iowa State Apiarist.
As Apiarist,
his responsibilities include inspection and regulation of honey bee
pests, parasites, & diseases, and a good amount of outreach to both
beekeepers and non-beekeepers. He serves on the board of the Iowa
Honey Producers Association. Aside from his work for IDALS, he has
bees here and there around Polk County.
Iowa Beekeeping
We'll discuss
what it is to be a beekeeper here, some of the difficulties bees &
beekeepers are dealing with these days, and the general importance of
honey bees.
Mary Buck
Mary was born
and raised in Ames, Iowa. She has a Bachelor's Degree in biology from
Iowa State University and a Master's Degree in Science Education from
Truman State University. Mary taught biology and chemistry at Ames
High School where she is currently a study hall supervisor. In her
spare time, when not helping at Ames High athletic events, she enjoys
gardening, photography, and crafts.
Dad and His Roses
Mary Buck will speak about her father’s work and his goals as a rose
breeder and professor of horticulture at Iowa State
University. Dr. Griffith Buck worked to develop roses that were
easy to grow, cold hardy and disease resistant, as well as
beautiful. During his lifetime he named and released 85 commercial
varieties now known as the Buck Roses. After his death, his family named
and released an additional ten, bringing the total to 95.
Driving Directions
From Hwy 65/69 in Indianola, travel three blocks west on Euclid
Avenue to Buxton Street. Directly across the street is the
parking lot entrance. Park and follow the sidewalk signs west,
then north to the entrance of Great Hall on the Simpson College Campus.
