Dream of Beauty

This intermediate sized Goats Beard has remarkable tolerance of the hot, humid summers in the south.  but it is also very cold hardy to zone 3.

In early summer, large, creamy white, feathery plumes are produced on dark red stems atop compact mounds of astilbe-like foliage. The effect is similar to that of a large astilbe and it can be used in a similar manner in the landscape. Planted en masse, the effect is simply stunning! Full sun-shade, deer resistant, Zones 3-7.

Masses of sugar-pink flowers with burnt orange centers in fall on this spectacular 1960 intro. from legendary Great Plains plantsman, Claude Barr. Cutting grown selection with gray-green foliage performs well in a wide range of soil types, including clay. Give it plenty of room! Named by Lauren Springer in Horticulture magazine as a 'Heroic Performer' in the fall garden.   Zone 4

Clematis pitcheri

Clematis
Snow Queen
6-10'
Loads of violet-purple bells with recurved tips
July-Sept.; attractive and interesting, rich brown seed heads. Central US native.
Best in sun or part shade. PG3.  Zone 5
Very large, white flowers with slightly cupped petals and ruffled margins, a tinge of mauve at the center and striking burgundy-red anthers. Flowers profusely over a long period of time, May-June and Aug-Sept. From New Zealand. PG2. Sun-part shade. Attracts hummingbirds; deer and rabbit resistant.    Zones 4-8
Delphinium
Blushing Brides
4-6’ x 2’
Echinacea
Tomato Soup
Bold spires of rich mulberry pink to soft dusky pink flowers with brown or white bees stand up to 6' tall, adding a dramatic presence to the landscape in early summer. Removing spent flower spikes will result in another round of blooms on secondary spikes in late summer and fall. However, its large, coarsely textured leaves make this plant attractive even when it's not in bloom.

This selection is a member of the New Millennium Hybrids. The English hybrid type of delphiniums are bred by Dowdeswell's Delphiniums in New Zealand and are hand crossed to produce the highest quality seed. These F1 hybrids have excellent form, strong stems, and a vigorous growth habit. They were selected for their improved tolerance of heat and humidity, while retaining their cold hardiness. Sun-part shade, attracts butterflies and hummers, deer and rabbit resistant.
Zones 3-7

Stunning warm, tomato-red flowers to 5" wide.
A real treat to 3' tall and nearly as wide covered with flowers till frost. Plants are well branched and show excellent vigor. Easy to grow in full sun with good drainage. Full sun.  Zones 4-9.

Gallardia
Oranges and Lemons
Gazania linearis
Colorado Gold

Gorgeous flowers in pale orange trimmed with lemon yellow. Stunning in full bloom and in our experience, a quick sell out at retail. The lighter orange is much easier to use in designs than the more garish red and yellow combination typical of Gaillardia. Easy to grow and attractive, it is ideal for hot dry locations. Tolerant of humidity, but not wet feet. Its flower power is increased by regular deadheading. Full sun.

1998 Plant Select. Glossy mounds of deep green, strap-shaped leaves are spangled with 3", shiny yellow flowers all season. Cold hardy mountain cousin to annual bedding Gazanias. Does well in ordinary garden treatment or in unamended dry soils as well (once established).

Zone 4

Sun-psh, drought tolerant, attracts butterflies and hummers, rabbit resistant, Zn 3-9.

Fuzzy, chartreuse to lime green, nearly evergreen foliage erupts in September, with white fountains of pure white flowers, continues until frost. A very easy care plant tolerant of dry shade and a wide variety of conditions.

Compact, with nicely arranged foliage, it shows very well in a container and makes an elegant and long-lasting addition to the garden. Part sun-shade, no wet feet, Zones 4-9.

Sport of H.'Birchwood Parky's Gold' with a dark blue-green center and gold edge.  Same wonderful vigor and profuse flowers as it's parent.  Excellent in combination with the aforementioned and H. 'Sweet Home Chicago' since they are all leaf variations of the same plant.  They are also superb choices for the Landscaper looking for durable, adaptable, good performing, carefree Hostas.

Kalimiris yomena
Variegata
Loosely ruffled, wide, wine-red falls with a white blaze below light lavender signals. 36” tall. Midseason. Zone 3.

Penstemon
Dark Towers

Pinkish to reddish seed heads, rust resistant, vigorous, stands well over winter, 4-5 feet x 2-3 feet, full sun – part sun, drought tolerant, deer resistant, Zn 2-9.

Glossy bronze-red foliage is topped with masses of pink flowers in July and August. Tolerates high heat and humidity. Compared to 'Husker's Red' this beauty is taller and has much darker foliage which stays darker. Nice masses of large pink flowers emerge from July through August in open clusters. Dale Lindgren of University of Nebraska created this ultra-hardy form, pink flowering form. Full Sun, Zones 3-8

Pulmonaria
Raspberry Splash
Spodiopogon sibericus
(Frost Grass)
Dazzling raspberry-pink flower clusters dance among the dark green, silver-spotted leaves in late spring. This variety is characterized by its fairly upright growing habit and profuse flowering abilities. This hybrid is a cross between 'Bertram Anderson' and 'Barfield Pink'. It is a Terra Nova introduction.

Pulmonaria is an underused perennial that grows well in shady gardens. It is especially attractive when planted among hostas, ferns, and brunneras. Its flowers are among the most brilliantly colored blossoms of all perennials. Psh-shade, moist, well-drained soil, attracts hummingbirds, deer and rabbit resistant,
Zones 3-9.
Useful for adding a tropical look and feel to northern gardens, this grass looks a little bit like a short bamboo.  Bright green leaves measuring .5 to 1 inch wide are held nearly horizontally on upright stems.

Beginning in mid to late summer, erect flower scapes carry 8-12 inch long, deep purple, airy panicles which age to tan.  They persist into winter if left standing.  In the fall, this grass may turn a rich burgundy red color if sited properly in full sun.  Full sun-psh, purple seedheads mid-late summer, Zn 4-9.

This grass is effective when planted singly or in large drifts in the landscape.  It is durable and long-lived.
